Why We Chose MultiFrax for Our Denver Patients

Living in Colorado means enjoying a beautiful, active, outdoor lifestyle. Unfortunately, our high altitude and intense UV exposure can take a serious toll on your skin, accelerating sun damage and premature aging.

You need a powerful intervention to reverse this environmental damage, but your busy schedule likely doesn’t allow for weeks of hiding indoors. We chose MultiFrax because it perfectly bridges the gap between high-powered clinical results and a highly manageable recovery.

Most patients can resume their normal, non-sweaty daily activities within just 24 to 48 hours. It is the ultimate solution for achieving a flawless complexion without putting your life on hold.

The Difference Maker

The MultiFrax Difference: SimulScan™ Technology Explained

The secret behind this laser’s exceptional performance is its patented SimulScan™ technology. Older laser systems often require your provider to make separate, sequential passes over your face to treat different depths of the skin.

MultiFrax changes the game by firing both wavelengths simultaneously in a single, synergistic pulse. This dual-delivery system allows for superior thermal penetration, meaning we can achieve deeper, more transformative results in less time.

A three-part diagram illustrating different laser treatments on a cross-section of skin. The left panel shows a laser emitting light beams that penetrate deep into the lower skin layers, labeled "NON-ABLATIVE 1550nm". The center panel shows a laser emitting light beams that only target the shallow, uppermost layer of the skin, labeled "NON-ABLATIVE 1927nm". The right panel shows a laser emitting a combination of both deep and shallow light beams simultaneously, labeled "SIMULSCAN 1550nm + 1927nm".
1927nm

Erasing Surface Pigment and Sun Damage

The 1927nm wavelength acts as your skin's surface polisher. It specifically targets the upper layers of tissue to lift away mild-to-moderate sun damage and stubborn pigmented lesions.

This wavelength is highly effective for managing pigmentation like melasma and sun spots, and for smoothing out superficial texture. As the skin heals, it reveals a radiant, even-toned, and refreshed complexion.

1550nm

Smoothing Texture, Scars, and Fine Lines

The 1550nm wavelength dives deeper to address the structural foundation of your skin. It stimulates profound collagen remodeling to help soften fine lines, deep wrinkles, and severe sun damage.

It is also incredibly effective at breaking down the tough tissue associated with acne scars and surgical scars. By targeting these deeper layers, it helps restore a smooth, healthy, and youthful surface.

Comparing Options

MultiFrax vs. The Competition: Why It’s the Ultimate Upgrade

If you have been researching laser treatments, you have likely come across several well-known brand names. Here is why MultiFrax is often the smarter, more modern choice for our patients.

MultiFrax vs. Fraxel Dual

While both devices use similar wavelengths, MultiFrax features a significantly smaller dot diameter of 150 microns, compared to Fraxel’s 250-350 microns. This precise, smaller micro-beam allows for a much faster healing response in the tissue.

MultiFrax also delivers its energy simultaneously rather than sequentially. This allows for higher energy density and a more efficient, synergistic treatment.

MultiFrax vs. Halo (The "Halo Light" Advantage)

Halo is known for combining one non-ablative and one ablative wavelength, which can result in an aggressive, more prolonged recovery period. MultiFrax utilizes two non-ablative wavelengths to treat the exact same skin conditions with noticeably less intense downtime.

Often referred to as “Halo Light,” it is the perfect solution for patients who want exceptional rejuvenation but cannot afford to pause their busy lives. It is also an excellent option for maintaining your results after a previous Halo treatment.

MultiFrax vs. Moxi

Moxi has become popular for its gentle, “glow-boosting” effects, but it uses only the more superficial 1927nm laser wavelength. MultiFrax delivers the same wavelength and power of Moxi but with the option to add the 1550nm laser wavelength for deeper correction.

MultiFrax vs. Clear + Brilliant

Clear + Brilliant is notable for virtually no downtime, but this is because can only deliver a fraction of the energy MultiFrax is capable of delivering. MultiFrax allows us to provide a truly bespoke treatment, gentle like Clear + Brilliant or scaled up in power to meet your specific skin goals.

What to expect

The MultiFrax Patient Experience: Minimal Downtime, Maximum Results

We believe in setting clear, accurate expectations so you can feel completely confident in your care. Here is what your MultiFrax journey will look like.

Preparing for Your Session

To ensure the safest and most effective treatment, we ask that you avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for two weeks prior to your appointment.

One week before your session, you will need to pause the use of active skincare ingredients. This includes retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid (AHAs/BHAs), and hydroquinone.

What to Expect During Treatment

When you arrive, we will apply a topical numbing cream for about 30 minutes to ensure your comfort. The actual full-face laser treatment typically takes just 30 to 45 minutes.

Most patients describe the sensation as a feeling of warmth, prickling, or a light rubber-band snap. This is highly tolerable for most people, and the discomfort subsides quickly once the session is complete.

The 24-48 Hour Recovery and the "MENDs" Phase

Immediately after your treatment, you can expect mild redness and swelling that mimics a moderate sunburn, which typically lasts 24 to 48 hours. While functional recovery is rapid, your “social downtime”—when you feel comfortable being seen without makeup—typically ranges from just 2 to 7 days.

Following the initial redness, your skin will enter the MENDs (microscopic epidermal necrotic debris) phase for the next 5 to 10 days. You will notice tiny dark dots and a rough, “sandpaper-like” texture—this is simply the treated tissue naturally sloughing off to reveal the fresh, glowing skin underneath.

Real Patient Results

MultiFrax Before and After: Real Patient Results

Some changes in brightness and texture may be visible within days to weeks, as the outer skin renews. Collagen remodeling is gradual, so improvement in firmness, scars, and wrinkles typically builds over 2–5 months and can last months to years with good sun protection, though natural aging and new sun exposure continue over time.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about MultiFrax

What is the MultiFrax laser?

MultiFrax is a fractional, non-ablative laser that uses two wavelengths (1550 nm and 1927 nm) to improve skin texture, tone, and discoloration with relatively quick recovery. Instead of treating 100% of the surface, it creates microscopic treatment zones while leaving surrounding skin intact, which speeds healing and reduces downtime compared with fully or fractional ablative resurfacing.

Does laser resurfacing hurt?

Treatment pain varries depending on the laser used but at Core Dermatology, we prioritize your comfort. For lighter treatments like HALO, topical numbing cream is sufficient. For deep resurfacing (TRL), Core Dermatology utilizes advanced pain management, including nerve blocks and cooling air, to make the procedure manageable.

What skin concerns can MultiFrax treat?

MultiFrax can help improve fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, surgical scars, enlarged pores, and rough or uneven skin texture. It can also reduce brown spots and sun damage, melasma and other hyperpigmentation, and general dullness or loss of radiance.

Which areas of the body can be treated?

Most patients choose the face, but MultiFrax can also be used on the neck, chest, hands, and other areas with sun damage, scars, or texture issues, if appropriate for your skin and goals.

Am I a good candidate for MultiFrax?

MultiFrax is suitable for most skin types and is often used on fair to medium and darker skin tones, and even in patients with melasma.

What happens during the procedure?

Your skin is cleansed, and a topical anesthetic cream may be applied for about 30 minutes, although this is often not necessary. The laser handpiece is then passed over the skin in a series of controlled passes; a full-face treatment usually takes about 30–45 minutes, depending on the settings and areas treated.

Does the treatment hurt?

Most patients describe a feeling of warmth, prickling, or a rubber-band snap sensation during treatment, but topical numbing (if necessary) and cooling measures make it tolerable for the majority of people. Discomfort usually decreases quickly once the treatment is finished.

What will my skin look and feel like afterward?

Right after treatment, the skin typically appears red and slightly swollen, similar to a moderate sunburn, and may feel warm, tight, or rough to the touch. Over the following days, you may notice bronzing, sandpaper-like texture, or tiny dark dots, followed by flaking or peeling as the skin renews.

How much downtime should I expect?

Most people can resume light, non-sweaty daily activities within 24–48 hours, but visible redness, swelling, and texture changes may last for several days. Depending on treatment intensity, social downtime (when you feel comfortable being seen without makeup) typically ranges from about 2–7 days for the face, with some residual pinkness possible for longer.

How many treatments will I need?

Many patients notice improvement after a single session, especially in tone and texture, but optimal results usually require a series. A common plan averages 3 treatments spaced about 2–6 weeks apart, adjusted based on your skin concerns and how aggressively the laser is used. Once an improved skin baseline is achieved, patients often return every 6-12 months for a maintenance, lighter setting treatment.

When will I see results, and how long do they last?

Some changes in brightness and texture may be visible within days to weeks, as the outer skin renews. Collagen remodeling is gradual, so improvement in firmness, scars, and wrinkles typically builds over 2–5 months and can last months to years with good sun protection, though natural aging and new sun exposure continue over time.

What are the possible side effects?

Short-term side effects can include redness, swelling, mild discomfort, bronzing, and flaking, which are expected parts of healing. Less common risks include infection, acne or milia flares, prolonged redness, changes in skin color (darkening or lightening), scarring, or unsatisfactory cosmetic improvement.

Is MultiFrax safe for darker skin tones?

MultiFrax is a non-ablative fractional system that can be used in a wide range of skin types, including some darker complexions, but the risk of pigment changes is higher and requires expert, safe parameter selection.

Can MultiFrax be combined with other treatments?

MultiFrax can often be combined with injectables (such as neuromodulators or fillers), light-based treatments (IPL, BBL), laser (VBeam for redness, Morpheus8 microneedling with radiofrequency), or topical skincare to enhance overall rejuvenation when timed appropriately. Your plan will be individualized to determine the safest and most effective sequence and spacing between procedures.

How is MultiFrax different from Moxi, Clear&Brilliant, LaseMD, or Fraxel Dual?

MultiFrax is highly versatile, allowing your provider to replicate settings of Moxi plus any of the other laser device listed above. This means treatments can be customized to your individual goals, and we are not constrained by the more limited settings of other devices.

How is MultiFrax different from Halo?

Similar to Halo, MultiFrax combines two different wavelengths into one fractionated resurfacing device. Halo combines one non-ablative with one ablative laser, while MultiFrax combines two non-ablative lasers. Both are indicated for the same skin conditions, but Halo treatments tend to be more aggressive and with more prominent skin changes during recovery. This is why Halo is often a “one and done” treatment. MultiFrax is perfect for maintaining results after Halo, or for patients that don’t want Halo downtime. MultiFrax is sometimes referred to as “Halo Light”.

A consultation determines the most effective and safe schedule for each person. Dr. Contreras will customize your treatment using settings appropriate for the degree of sun damage and wrinkling present while taking into consideration the allowable recovery time.
