Understanding Laser Technology

What is a Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL)?

A Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL) is a non-invasive skin treatment laser designed to target vascular lesions, such as rosacea and spider veins, by using a concentrated 595nm wavelength of light. This light energy is converted into heat to safely collapse targeted blood vessels while leaving the surrounding skin tissue intact.

How PDL Works: Recognized as the most effective way to treat facial redness, the V Beam laser is highly effective because it specifically targets the hemoglobin in red blood cells. By heating these vessels, the laser triggers the body’s natural healing process to clear the redness without damaging the epidermis.

What is a V Beam Pulsed Dye Laser?

The V Beam is a specific, high-performance brand of Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL), distinguished from other PDLs by its proprietary safety and delivery systems. While all PDLs use a 595nm wavelength to target redness, the V Beam stands apart due to its patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD), which releases a burst of cryogen spray milliseconds before the laser pulse to protect the epidermis and improve patient comfort.

V Beam’s micro-pulse technology, which divides a single laser pulse into eight tiny “sub-pulses.”, allows for the delivery of higher energy to clear stubborn vessels more effectively while significantly reducing the risk of the dark purple bruising (purpura) that was a hallmark of older, traditional pulsed dye lasers.

Infographic explaining the 5-step process of V-Beam Pulsed Dye Laser treatment: targeting dilated blood vessels, DCD cooling protection, 595nm laser absorption by hemoglobin, vessel coagulation, and natural skin clearance. Includes treated conditions like rosacea, spider veins, and acne scars.

Key Differences Between V Beam and Standard PDLs

Integrated Cooling: V Beam's DCD system is more precise than the external air cooling or contact cooling used by many competitors, allowing for safer treatment of higher-energy settings.

Micro-Pulse Energy Delivery: By breaking the energy into eight micro-pulses, V Beam treats the vessel more gently than the "single-hit" method used by basic PDLs, leading to less downtime.

How It Helps

How V Beam PDL Laser Benefits Your Skin: What it Can be Used to Treat

The V Beam laser provides significant improvement for a variety of vascular and pigmented skin conditions. By utilizing Selective Photothermolysis (using specific light wavelengths to heat and destroy targeted cells, while leaving surrounding tissue unharmed), the laser targets specific chromophores (color) in the skin to treat the following conditions:

Rosacea

Reduces chronic facial redness and visible flushing.

Port Wine Stains (birthmarks)

Lightens these distinct birthmarks over a series of sessions.

Angiomas

Clears small, bright red vascular growths (cherry angiomas).

Poikiloderma of Civatte (sun damage)

Addresses the mottled redness and sun damage often found on the neck and chest.

Facial Veins (broken blood vessels)

Collapses broken capillaries and “spider veins” around the nose and cheeks.

Scars and Stretch Marks

Improves the red appearance of surgical scars or stretch marks.

Benign Vascular Lesions

Targets and eliminates a wide range of benign vascular growths.

Post-Procedure Bruising

Accelerates recovery and clearance of bruising from prior procedures.

Some Benign Pigmented Lesions

Selective photothermolysis addresses certain pigmented skin concerns.

Acne

Treats active lesions and leftover red marks from past breakouts.

How Long does V Beam PDL Take to Work?

V Beam results are both immediate and cumulative, with most patients seeing a visible reduction in redness within 7 to 14 days as the body reabsorbs treated blood vessels. While a single session can provide noticeable improvement, optimal results for chronic conditions like rosacea typically require a series of 3 to 5 treatments, with final results appearing several months after the initial session.

The Result Timeline: What to Expect

Days 1–3

You may experience temporary redness or mild swelling (similar to a sunburn). If “purpura” (bruising) was intended for deeper vessels, it will be most visible now.

Week 1

Initial redness subsides, and many patients notice a “brighter” complexion as superficial vascularity begins to fade.

Weeks 2–4

The body continues to naturally clear the collapsed vessels. This is typically when the most dramatic clearance from a single session is visible.

Months 3-6

After completing a full series of treatments, the skin reaches its peak improvement in tone, texture, and clarity.

How Long do V Beam Results Last?

The longevity of your V Beam results depends heavily on the condition being treated and your commitment to sun protection. Some examples of longevity are below:

Spider Veins & Angiomas

Once a specific vessel or “cherry” spot is successfully destroyed and absorbed, it is typically gone for good. However, new vessels may form over time due to aging or sun exposure.

Rosacea & General Redness

Because rosacea is a chronic condition, V Beam is a highly effective management tool rather than a permanent cure. Most patients enjoy results for 6 to 12 months or longer. We typically recommend one maintenance session per year to keep redness at bay.

Scars & Port Wine Stains

Results for these conditions are often long-term or permanent, though multiple initial sessions are required to achieve the desired fading.

To maximize the lifespan of your results in the high altitude Denver sun, we strictly recommend daily SPF 30+ sun protection to prevent the formation of new vascular damage.

Recovery Guide

V Beam Aftercare: Protecting Your Results and Ensuring Safe Healing

Proper aftercare is essential for maximizing the benefits of your V Beam treatment and protecting your skin as it heals. Because the laser targets vascular structures beneath the surface, your skin will be temporarily more sensitive to heat and UV radiation. Following these guidelines ensures a smooth recovery and helps maintain the clear, even-toned results achieved at Core Dermatology.

Immediate Guidelines

(First 24–48 Hours)

During the first two days, your primary goal is to keep the skin cool and avoid irritation.

Apply Cold Compresses:

To reduce swelling or a “sunburn” sensation, apply a cold pack or chilled cloth to the treated area for 10–15 minutes every hour as needed.

Sleep Elevated:

Keeping your head slightly propped up on extra pillows for the first night can significantly minimize morning facial swelling.

Avoid Heat:

Stay away from hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and intense exercise for at least 48 hours, as excessive heat can increase redness and swelling.

Be Gentle:

Cleanse the skin with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water. Avoid scrubbing or using mechanical exfoliating brushes.

The Healing Phase

(Days 3-7)

As the skin begins to settle, focus on hydration and protection.

Moisturize Frequently:

Use a gentle, bland moisturizer (such as CeraVe or Cetaphil) to keep the skin barrier hydrated and prevent crusting.

Skip the Actives:

Pause the use of “active” skincare ingredients, including Retin-A, retinol, vitamin C, and alpha/beta hydroxy acids, for at least 5 to 7 days or until the skin is no longer pink.

Do Not Pick:

If you experience any minor crusting or bruising, do not pick or scratch at the skin, as this can lead to scarring or pigment changes.

Makeup Use:

You may typically apply mineral makeup 24 hours after treatment, provided the skin is not broken or blistering.

Long-Term Protection

in Denver

Living in the Denver area means your skin is exposed to higher levels of UV radiation due to our elevation. This makes consistant sun protection even more important in the healing process.

s  Crucial Note

Sun exposure is the primary cause of new vascular damage. To protect your investment, apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily, even on cloudy days. Physical sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are preferred, as they provide an immediate barrier and are less likely to irritate post-laser skin.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about V Beam and Pulsed Dye Lasers

Is V Beam Pulsed Dye Laser painful?

Most patients describe the sensation as a brief “rubber band snap” against the skin. The treatment is well-tolerated because the integrated Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) sprays a cooling mist onto the skin immediately before each laser pulse to minimize discomfort.

How much does V Beam cost in Denver?

The cost of V Beam treatments varies based on the size of the treatment area and the number of sessions required to achieve your goals. Core Dermatology provides transparent, customized quotes during your initial consultation.

Is there downtime after V Beam?

Downtime is minimal for most patients. You may experience mild redness or swelling for 24-48 hours. Depending on the intensity of the treatment required for your specific condition, some patients may experience “purpura” (temporary bruising) for 3-7 days.

What changes can I expect right after treatment?

Redness and swelling are normal reactions post-procedure and are most prominent during first 2-4 days. If bruising occurs, it lasts an average of 7-10 days but can last up to 2 weeks in some cases. The degree of swelling increases in proportion to the size of the area treated.

How many treatments are recommended? How far apart?

Some spots will respond after one treatment, but often it can take 2, or sometimes 3, treatments to see optimal improvement. Treatments are typically spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

How painful is treatment?

Pain 6/10. Pain and discomfort are experienced very briefly during treatment but are not expected after treatment. Most patients do not require any topical anesthetics. In fact, we try to avoid application of topical anesthetic because it can constrict blood vessels, which can make treatment less effective. Consider taking Tylenol extra strength about one hour before your treatment.

How long does the treatment last?

Small areas take only minutes to treat. If treating larger areas like the cheeks and nose, you will be scheduled for at least 30 minutes, but the treatment will take 15-20 minutes, on average.
