Surgical Excisions

Surgical excision is oftentimes the best option for treatment for dysplastic nevi and some types of skin cancer.  Examples of skin cancers best treated with in office excision include small basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas on the trunk and extremities, and small melanoma in situs and melanomas.  If one of these is diagnosed by biopsy at your visit, we may recommend surgical excision.

Excision of benign skin growths such as lipomas and cysts is also possible.  Removal of these bothersome growths can alleviate the irritation they cause.

Will I require general anesthesia (to be “put under) for my excision?

No. All excisions are done under local anesthetic. If you require general anesthesia for a large or complex lesion, you will be referred elsewhere.

How can I prepare for my surgical excision?

It is important to wear loose fitting clothing.  If the area being treated is located on the scalp, face, neck, trunk, or arms, please wear a button front shirt.  If the area being treated in around the eye, it may be necessary to bring a driver.
